Reading the news and finding out a new company has been hacked at the expense of millions of usernames/passwords/dollars is of no surprise to anyone these days.

Almost daily we see a mogul kneeling in the face of hackers, and this scenario keeps on repeating. Why is that? Didn't they learn anything from their past experiences? Well, it depends.

The universal trend following a data breach is for companies to strengthen the area that was attacked, ignoring the other 99 problems out there.

So, why do companies keep getting hacked?

  1. They don’t take it seriously

Seriously. Companies bet all their money on “It’s not going to happen to me”.

2. Humans are the weakest link

You can’t expect them not to add “password” as their password or click random links. Or update the security tools- it just slows them down. You can’t fix bugs in your employees.

3. Hackers are getting better, companies- worse

The bigger the company, the longer it takes to make changes, so they can’t always keep up with hackers’ speed and “innovations”.

4. There’s no security budget

Most companies and government agencies only spend up to 10% of their IT budget on security.

5. Security is old

I mean, dinosaur old. Dated and unpatched code is really dangerous on the long run, allowing hackers to take advantage of this.

There you go. These are just some of the reasons behind all the hacks you see all over the Internet. Companies better level up their cyber-security game, or else they will be next on the list.
