Even though the Internet is filled with horror stories about high profile data theft, cyber-crime and stolen passwords, people continue to ignore the importance and urgency to level up their cyber presence and setting up an efficient security strategy.

Small companies are especially exposed to all the cyber-risks out there because they are still using outdated software, don’t have a security policy in place and don’t have the necessary budget for it. Financial companies or those from the medical industry are especially exposed, since the value of personal data is increasing at lightning speed.

Ensuring the security of your business data and networks is a basic responsibility, but it comes along with huge challenges. On one hand, you must protect your business, but on the other hand you must provide your employees access to the information they need. There are lots to consider when making your company’s cyber-security plan, whether it’s a leak, hack, property theft, customer data or employee safety.

Here are 8 tips that you can use for increasing the cyber-security and eliminating data loss from your company:

1. Perform a security audit

The first step is to identify which are the the vulnerable parts of your business, what information you hold, what’s its purpose, where it is located and if it needs to be protected. Unless you know what needs protection, you can’t protect it. It’s essential for the person performing the audit to be a professional and it audits your entire IT infrastructure.

2. Make your employees aware of their role in security

You can’t go through all the effort of securing your company on your own. It’s super important that you show your staff that they have a crucial role in defending your company’s cyber security. They are the first line of security that stands between your data and the hackers, and an attentive employee can do wonders in minimizing data breaches.

3. Isolate sensitive data

It is best that the data that is considered sensitive and prone to data theft to be isolated and located on the fewest number of servers and computers. The principle is that the fewer copies of the data you have, the easier it is to protect it.

4. Encrypt your data

Encryption is a wonderful thing that keeps your data safe in case it is stolen. Why? Because unless the hackers actually have the encryption keys, they can’t use it.

Here’s a nice story of how encryption was used for the greater good,

and here is how encryption works:

5. Back it up

Set up a good back up plan to make sure you can retrieve all the information when you need it, even if there occurred a system crash or a cyber-attack. File sharing and syncing are effective, but don’t be afraid to use external devices.

6. Establish security policies

Your employees don’t know what they are supposed to do to protect the company’s data, unless you make it clear and simple for them. Set up security policies for them to follow and therefore minimise accidents caused by not knowing.

7. Protect mobile devices

Office work is not what it used to be 10 years ago. With the mobile devices market boom, your sales team is surely on the move all the time, together with their smart phones and tablets. The more employees work away from the office, the harder it is to protect them. Right? Not necessarily. There are plenty of cyber-security solutions that protect all your digital properties.

8. Set up multi-factor authentication

Passwords are so last decade! Setting up strong passwords is just not enough any-more, and it’s becoming harder for employees to come up with a new passwords they can remember. It’s time to level up your game and switch to passwordless authentication. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

That’s all folks! Don’t waste a minute more and get started on increasing the cyber-security of your company. Remember you must keep up with all the threats that arise and also all the cool security solutions that are being created. Good luck!
